MySQL Introduction - San Francisco

This convenient one-day training course introduces students to the suite of MySQL open source programs including the database server, administrator, query browser and migration toolkits. Students learn where they can access each free download and how to use them. In this class, students run programs on Windows, with periodic demonstrations of common processes on the Linux platform.

Students may register for this class either solo or as part of our five-day PHP/MySQL boot camp.

The MySQL Server

The MySQL Server is the database server responsible for authenticating users, storing and manipulating data. Class attendees learn various installation options and find out where key files reside within each folder.

The MySQL Administrator

The MySQL Administrator, an add-on program, provides a Graphical User Interface (GUI) to easily manage and maintain the MySQL Server. With the program, Database Administrators can configure options, add table structures and new users, set key constraints, optimize and perform backups. This class shows students how to efficiently install, use and manage the MySQL Administrator.

The Query Browser

The Query Browser is a graphical tool connecting various database servers and tracking different queries. Its features assist in creating, editing and debugging SQL statements. Students train in how to effectively install and use the Query Browser.

Structured Query Language (SQL)

SQL is a standardized language which issues commands to databases. Using SQL, one can perform operations on tables and records, such as creating and joining tables, inserting and sorting records. In this class, students learn how to find, sort, insert and update records. Students also discuss ways to perform more complex multiple table joins.

The MySQL Migration Toolkit

The MySQL Migration Toolkit helps administrators migrate quickly from Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Access database to MySQL. The Migration Toolkit is platform independent tool with the ability to migrate from one database server to another. Students gain the skills they need to use the MySQL Migration Toolkit.

Prerequisites:

  • Experience with at least one other database
