HTML Fundamentals Class

The history of the web and how the internet it works

This class begins with a discussion about the history of the World Wide Web (WWW), how HTML began, who defines it and why it has various standards. We then illustrate the relationship between your Internet Service Provider (ISP), your browser and the Web. Furthermore, we explain other acronyms and technologies including XML, JSP, PHP, ASP and CSS.

The Tools

Course training continues with a cursory view of various tools students need to create a website. Students learn the differences between various editing tools including WYSIWYG Web Applications, the Text and HTML Editor. Students also learn File Transfer Protocol (FTP), graphics program configurations and options.

Displaying Text in a Browser

In this training section, students learn how to perform basic text mark-up functions. This tells the browser more information about certain text sections and how they should be displayed on each page. Students gain a solid understanding of tag use, acquire hands-on experience creating HTML files and changing basic formatting options, such as bold, italic and font size. They also learn how to manipulate layout using paragraphs and single line breaks.

Headings, Titles and Proper HTML Grammar

Writing proper HTML ensures different browsers render each web page correctly. In this class, students learn how to validate web pages to ensure HTML standards compliance. They also learn how to write proper HTML, diagnose common mistakes and write valid HTML comments. This course also teaches students how to create different heading levels and add title bar text.

Setting Properties for Formatting Effects

This section helps students provide additional information, or attributes, about each element to the browser. This helps authors set various properties that define formatting effects for each element, create tool-tip flyovers and set styles. Completing this training section, students will thoroughly understand the title tag and its effect in search engines, how to align text and specify web page background color.

Images on the Web

Text documents, though informational, gain more viewer interest when combined with images. This course leads students through multiple exercises to create and modify existing images for web page integration. This class discusses which image formats are suitable for the web, advantages and disadvantages of various formats, image size and resolution, file naming conventions, image and text placement, and image background placement.

Creating a Website Using Links

One of the main strengths of any web page is its ability to not only link different information within one site, but also to external sites. In this training section, students learn how to make both text and image links, how to change the link color, how to create internal and external links and how to use a link to launch an email application.

Bulleted and Numbered Lists

While paragraph formatted text and headings are useful, lists are sometimes preferred. HTML provides built-in support for both bulleted and numbered lists. This section shows students ways they can create bulleted and numbered lists, a list within another list or a numbered list starting at a particular number. Students also learn how to change bullet types.

Special Text Formatting Elements and Characters

In this training section, students learn additional text elements like block quotation, indent text, special symbols and text formatting to appear as it does in code.

HTML Tables of Data

Tables provide useful means of organizing information for presentation. HTML allows customized table creation. In this course, students learn various aspects of table creation such as table borders, different cell types, background colors, table elements (cell, row and entire table), text alignment within rows and cells and multi-row, multicolumn table data arrangement.

Tools that Write HTML

A good understanding of the HTML language is vital for web page creation. However, there are tools available that help in HTML page creation using a simple graphical interface. These tools help webmasters eliminate some of the more tedious coding tasks. In this exercise, students learn about Mozilla Composer, a WYSISWG editor used for web page development. Students perform various tasks with Mozilla Composer, creating tables, hyperlinks and navigation bars.

Prerequisites:

• Familiarity with personal computing and Microsoft Windows
• Familiarity with the right-click function
• Ability to copy and paste in a word processing application
• Ability to switch between open programs
• Ability to use the Windows® Explore feature to view files contained in a folder
