Perl (Practical Extraction and Reporting Language) is a popular all-purpose programming language that works on almost all operating systems.

Install ActiveState Perl on Windows
Understand what is in the folders in the Perl installation directory
Set up a text editor for Perl-related features such as syntax highlighting and script execution
Create simple Perl scripts with variables, operators, conditionals, loops, and input/output
Use Perl's string manipulation functions
Use Perl's math functions such as sqrt() and rand()
Programmatically launch operating system instructions from your script and capture the output in a Perl variable
Identify special characters such as $, \, @, and % -- and avoid the common bugs associated with their use
Convert a Perl script to run on Unix
