MS Excel Intermediate - San Francisco

Continuing where the Excel Introduction training course left off, this one-day class delves further into the use and design of worksheets and workbooks. Course attendees also learn advanced functions. Topics include data validation, functions and charts.

Working with Microsoft Excel Worksheets

Excel offers an easy-to-use interface and advanced functionality to simplify even the most complex spreadsheet tasks. Tab customization makes it easier to quickly find and retrieve the data you need when working with large amounts of data spread over multiple worksheets in a workbook. Users may also want to reference information in other workbooks or worksheets without duplicating that data, ensuring real-time calculations. In this training course, students learn about worksheet viewing, renaming and color-coding, group editing, worksheet manipulation techniques and formula linking. Class attendees also learn how to use 3-D references and safeguard their workbook or worksheet from unauthorized view.

Working with Excel Functions

Excel functions expedite and automate calculations, like basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and financial and statistical functions like averaging and standard deviation. In this training course, students learn intermediate-level functions including named range creation. Training course attendees also find out how to use the custom zoom, insert, financial and date functions.

Working with Formatting and Data Validation

Excel provides exceptional tools to help users control the type of data entered into each worksheet. The application also automates formatting based on various rules. For examples, users can ensure cells with a value greater than 100 automatically show in blue or those with a value less than 25 show in yellow. Students also learn how to apply and use data validation and conditional formatting, create and use custom formats, and work with auditing and error checking tools to ensure accuracy.

Creating Charts

Charts organize large amounts of data, presenting it in a clear, visual format. Class attendees learn how to create, manage and use Excel charts with hands-on instruction on the Chart Wizard, changing chart type (i.e. column, bar, pie or XY/Scatter), adjusting chart location on a page, adjusting size and change chart options. Charts are plotted using multiple data series. Training course attendees learn how to add or remove a data series to automatically adjust their chart, use a chart to change worksheet data and use the range finder.

Working with Charts

Once students have entered data and developed a chart, they may want to customize it to suit their needs. Training course participants receive thorough instruction on ways to format chart elements, use text boxes, and format chart text and objects to add graphic appeal. Students then learn how to print their chart accurately for presentation or storage.
