Intro to Programming (with JavaScript) - San Francisco

In surfing the Internet, web browsers will inevitably run across web pages using JavaScript programming aimed at creating an interactive experience. JavaScript is also used and adopted in many other applications including Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator.

This training class introduces introductory programming techniques for individuals with little to no programming experience. This course uses JavaScript to explore basic programming concepts, such as basic input/output, conditionals, loops, Boolean operations, functions and objects.

Programming Basics

In this training class, students learn programming skills via JavaScript and its syntax. Instructors emphasize programming techniques and core programming language features. Course attendees gain a solid understanding of important programming constructs and methodologies.

Understanding Comments and Basic Syntax

Students learn about the JavaScript syntax, including what the key requirements of the language are. They also find out what comments are, how to use them and what belongs in them. Students will work with two simple commands for input and output of data.

Working with Variables

In this section, students gain hands-on experience using variables and values. Attendees discuss the basics of variables: what they are, how they’re used and the operations they can help accomplish. Students will work with variables containing text, numbers and true or false values. Additionally, students will learn about basic operations with each of these data types.

Implementing Branching and Decisions

Programmers may want to execute various code chunks depending on particular conditions. This construct is called a conditional. Students learn the advantages of using conditionals in code. Through this training course, attendees will learn how to compare inputs with predefined conditions, how to direct script to a single either/or options set, and how to create a script that checks for multiple conditions.

Using Loops and Repetition

Occasionally, programmers need to repeat the same action until some requirement is met. This process is called looping. Students learn appropriate looping constructs and examine their components. They also learn the syntax used when creating a loop, how to specify the number of iterations and how to incorporate loops with conditionals.

Functions and Code Reuse

Programmers frequently need to collect a set of steps or actions within their programming language into a group called a function. To perform this action, students simply refer to the function and provide necessary information. This training session concludes with a thorough overview of the benefits of functions, how to run a function, how to pass a function information from the user, how to handle information that a function returns after running, and how to make reusable functions.

Working With Objects and Methods

Programming languages supporting objects are said to be Object Oriented. The Object Oriented Programming (OOP) model groups data and actions into an object for organizational ease. JavaScript has built-in support for commonly used objects such as arrays and dates, the Document Object Model (DOM) and custom objects. Students gain hands-on experience with objects, methods and properties.

Prerequisites:

  • HTML experience encouraged, but not required
