MySQL Fundamentals - San Francisco

This training course introduces students to the suite of MySQL open source programs including the database server, administrator, query browser and migration toolkits. Students learn where they can access each free download and how to use them. In this class, students run programs on Windows, with periodic demonstrations of common processes on the Linux platform.

Students may register for this class either solo or as part of our five-day PHP/MySQL boot camp.

The MySQL Server

The MySQL Server is the database server responsible for authenticating users, storing and manipulating data. Class attendees learn various installation options and find out where key files reside within each folder.

The MySQL Administrator

The MySQL Administrator, an add-on program, provides a Graphical User Interface (GUI) to easily manage and maintain the MySQL Server. With the program, Database Administrators can configure options, add table structures and new users, set key constraints, optimize and perform backups. This class shows students how to efficiently install, use and manage the MySQL Administrator.

The Query Browser

The Query Browser is a graphical tool connecting various database servers and tracking different queries. Its features assist in creating, editing and debugging SQL statements. Students train in how to effectively install and use the Query Browser.

The MySQL Migration Toolkit

The MySQL Migration Toolkit helps administrators migrate quickly from Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Access database to MySQL. The Migration Toolkit is platform independent tool with the ability to migrate from one database server to another. Students gain the skills they need to use the MySQL Migration Toolkit.

Structured Query Language (SQL) in MySQL

SQL is a standardized language which issues commands to databases. Using SQL, one can perform operations on data, such as retrieving it, performing calculations on it, ordering it chronologically or alphabetically, inserting new data, updating existing data, and more. In this part of the class we cover:

  • Selecting and sorting records
  • Updating or deleting existing data and inserting new records
  • Joining data from related tables
  • Performing calculations on groups of data (e.g., sales by department)
  • Creating "views" of data for further analysis
  • Creating "triggers" to execute when data is changed
  • Creating "stored procedures" to collect your SQL statements in functions
  • Creating "transactions" that execute as a group or not at all (e.g., decrementing inventory and incrementing sales)

Prerequisites:

  • Experience with at least one other database
