IIS Intro - San Francisco

Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) is the second most popular web server in use today. IIS is part of MS Windows and supports File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP/HTTPS).

Course attendees install and discover various IIS configuration settings and develop a running web server for PHP.

Installation and Basic Settings

Training begins with a discussion of the differences between IIS versions included with the various versions of Microsoft Windows and the relationship between IIS and Personal Web Servers. We then install and configure IIS as a basic web server, exploring settings including the root folder, directory browsing, ports and page timeouts.

Logs and Security

IIS lets administrators restrict website access based on their IP address, user or SSL authentication. Students learn how to restrict website access and the role of IUSR_accounts. Because websites are frequently hacked, students learn how to ensure a well configured web server with logs to aid investigation. They also learn how to enable logging, set log time period and log file location.

Serving Multiple Web Sites

Administrators can configure IIS to serve multiple websites from one web server. This is useful if you want to manage and host multiple domain names from one server. In this training, students also learn how to setup multiple websites from one machine using Virtual Directories.

Integrating IIS with PHP

IIS serves standard HTML files by default, but can also be configured to handle PHP files as well. This training shows you how to configure IIS for PHP, associating file extensions with executables.
